Stacking LA GATOR, STO scholarships and archdiocesan aid in New Orleans

The four layers of private school money in greater New Orleans, in the order they apply, and the 70 local schools on the state's STO list.

At New Orleans prices, LA GATOR is the first layer of a three- or four-layer plan. This guide puts the layers in order: the account, a Tuition Donation Credit (STO) scholarship, the Archdiocese of New Orleans' tuition assistance program, and the school's own aid, with the rule for how they combine.

Layer 1: LA GATOR

$5,243, $7,626 or up to $15,253, paid to the school through Odyssey against tuition and required fees. It is applied first, by law.

Layer 2: an STO scholarship

Louisiana's Tuition Donation Credit program funds school tuition organizations with tax-credited donations. A student qualifies with household income at or below 250% of poverty ($80,375 for a family of four) if he or she was in public school, is entering kindergarten, or already held a state scholarship. Awards are capped at the lesser of tuition and fees or 80% of the state per-pupil amount for grades K-8 (90% for high school). Under Act 403 the STO award is added after LA GATOR, and the two together can't exceed actual tuition and fees. Each STO has its own application and limited money; apply in the spring.

Layer 3: archdiocesan tuition assistance

The Archdiocese of New Orleans runs a tuition assistance program for families at its elementary and high schools, funded by the archdiocese and donors and administered through the schools' financial aid process (most use FACTS). Awards are need-based and vary by school and year. It is applied after LA GATOR and any STO award, and schools generally ask for the same income documentation you used for the 250% test, so file once and reuse it.

Layer 4: the school's own aid

Parishioner rates at elementary schools, sibling discounts, alumni and order-funded scholarships at the high schools, and work-study at a few. Ask every school the same question: do you apply LA GATOR before or after you calculate aid? The answer can move your balance by thousands.
